DAY 4: I am a child again, sitting in the audience as the lights go down and the stage lights up. Rows of music stands form wide U-shapes as the orchestra’s tuning quiets down and then dissolves. Tense seconds, waiting for him to appear. Then, to the left of the stage, he enters…tall, confident, commanding. The orchestra conductor. The leader of the band. My dad.
The shape of the recycled silver base of this pendant reminds me of the music stands from my childhood. Watching my dad conduct, every part of me trying to keep from breaking open with pride! And then all of my music lessons…peering at the music stand while my mouth bled because I thought the best time to learn to play the flute was right after I got braces. And the time I fell out of the school bus when I was struggling to get my cello and music stand out with me in the pouring rain. Because middle school just isn’t embarrassing enough without being a clumsy cellist.
The sterling silver base encapsulates a beautifully faceted agate stone full of variations that make each stone different. The agate is hand wrapped onto the base with sterling silver wire and then secured at the top with thick copper wire to give it an unexpected accent of warm color. I finish up the piece by adding a dark gray patina and then buffing the pendant just enough to bring out a few silver highlights.
